Backup options
toggle
default:"off"
Pro. Runs backups automatically at the frequency you choose, without anyone remembering to click anything.
select
default:"weekly"
daily, weekly, or monthly.Choose by how much work you would be willing to lose. A store taking orders every day should back up daily. A site that changes twice a year does not need a daily backup, and taking one just fills your disk.toggle
default:"on"
Excludes nothing. This is the setting you want unless size is a genuine problem.Turning it off reveals the five exclusion checkboxes below.
checkboxes
Five independent choices: WordPress Core, Media Library, Plugins, Themes, and Database.Core is a reasonable first exclusion, since WordPress core is re-downloadable and the manifest records the version. Media is the usual second one, because it is often most of the size and rarely changes.
Choosing exclusions
Exclude core
Exclude core
Safe. WordPress core is re-downloadable, and the version is recorded. What you lose is the ability to restore onto a completely empty server without installing WordPress first.
Exclude media library
Exclude media library
The usual way to make backups smaller. Reasonable only if your media is backed up somewhere else, or you could bear to lose it. Restoring a site without its images is not a restored site.
Exclude plugins or themes
Exclude plugins or themes
Both are re-installable, but your customizations are not. A modified child theme lives in
wp-content/themes and nothing re-downloads that.Exclude database
Exclude database
Almost never right. The database holds your posts, pages, settings, users, and orders. A files-only backup is not a backup of your site’s content.
These exclusions apply to scheduled backups. Manual backups have their own exclusions in the create dialog, so you can schedule a lean weekly backup and still take a full one by hand.
Retention options
toggle
default:"on"
Pro. Deletes older backups so the newest few are kept, enforcing your retention policy without anyone tidying up.
number
default:"3"
How many of the most recent backups to keep. Everything older is deleted.
